UC Ship Funds Program:

When To Apply

General calls for proposals will be issued annually, with the timing contingent on exigencies of the ship scheduling process. Announcements will be broadcast via email, and posted on this site.

See the menu at left for the most recent Request For Proposals, which describes vessel operational areas, proposal deadlines, and other information.

Programs using Revelle, Melville and New Horizon typically require long lead times in order to coordinate planning, permitting and efficient scheduling. Cruises on these vessels are usually scheduled during the calendar year that follows the proposal submission. Shorter lead times can be accommodated for programs aboard Sproul, due to that vessel's scheduling flexibility.

In some years special scheduling opportunities may occur, for instance when a large ship has a gap in its schedule later within the same calendar year. On those occasions the Program will announce these special opportunities, which may involve shorter-than-usual lead times.

Contingent on the availability of funds, the Program will consider unsolicited proposals that are submitted in order to take advantage of extraordinary research opportunities (for instance a response to a significant, ephemeral oceanographic event).
