Modifications & Miscellaneous Info Date: Tue, 25 Oct 94 12:42:01 -1000 From: "Douglas S. Luther" To: ACC_PIs@mano.soest.hawaii.edu Subject: ACC Deployment Cruise Schedule Cc: Rose Dufour

ACC PIs, A query by Randy prompted me to doublecheck our cruise schedule. I talked with Rose Dufour at Scripps today and learned the following. Since Melville is required to depart at 16:00 on the day of departure, and arrive at 08:00 on the day of arrival, we had been given only 27.67 days at sea, rather than our expected 29. (We also have 2 funded port days.) Rose noted that the port stop prior to our cruise is a long one, and so agreed to let us leave on March 17, so we can have 28.67 days at sea. Therefore, here is the present schedule for the ACC cruise in 1995, but note that nothing is cast in stone (more on this below):

NOTE: All dates and times are LOCAL Australian (DON'T FORGET THE DATELINE

WHEN MAKING YOUR TRAVEL PLANS!!)

March 12, 16:00 - Melville arrives in Hobart March 15, 16:00 - We are allowed to board ship; arrival of US participants in Hobart before this date implies hotel accomodations will be needed. NOTE: NO MEALS ARE PROVIDED ABOARD MELVILLE IN PORT. March 17, 16:00 - Melville departs for ACC experiment deployment. April 15, 08:00 - Melville arrives back in Hobart. April 16, 08:00 - We are required to leave ship (actually, there is flexibility here, since the cruise following ours has few people aboard. Therefore, Rose said it should be OK to stay aboard until April 17, 08:00.

The fly in the ointment for the schedule above is that Rose said the whole thing could slip one day, i.e., departure on March 18 and arrival on April 16. Rose should know within the week whether this is going to happen. My advice to US participants is to avoid purchasing airplane tickets that can't be changed. At least, give your travel schedule some flexibility in case the schedule slips a day or two.

Hi Rose, Would you please refresh my memory as to when the precruise meeting for the on-going Westward Expedition will be held in December? I recall it was December 14. Is this correct? How long do you expect the meeting to last? Mahalo, Doug

Rose, Below is my prospectus for Leg 11 of the Westward Expedition. Let me know if it needs to be shortened. I have cc'ed a copy to Michelle. Doug

Date: Wed, 11 Jan 95 01:50:07 -1000 From: "Douglas S. Luther" To: Rose Dufour Subject: Minutes from Pre-Cruise Mtg. Cc: dluther@iniki.soest.hawaii.edu

Hi Rose, The minutes from the pre-cruise meeting did arrive in today's mail. How important are these minutes? The reason I ask is that there are a number of inaccuracies due to some inaccurate statements that were made at the meeting. If the minutes are a very official document then I will want the inaccuracies corrected. One example is the 4000 lb load limit on the Allied crane for at-sea work. The Melville handbook states a load limit of 5000 lbs at sea, which I have confirmed is correct with Bob Wilson. Since I have the hard copy of the minutes, don't email me a copy. Thanks, Doug

Date: Sun, 12 Feb 95 14:05:12 -1000 From: "Douglas S. Luther" To: Rose Dufour Subject: Forms for Cruise Cc: dluther@iniki.soest.hawaii.edu

Hi Rose,

In response to my query, the res techs' office said your office advised them to tell me that the following four forms have to be filled out by all participants on my cruise, Leg 11 of the Westward Expedition:

  • a. Welcome Aboard (drugs and alcohol)
  • b. Physical ability to work at sea
  • c. Personnel questionnaire
  • d. Medical Advisory Services info sheet

I have seen only the first two and have forwarded copies of these to all PIs involved for eventual return to Scripps. Would you please immediately send me the latter two forms (`c' & `d') with instructions as to who is to receive them at Scripps and by when?

Also, I talked to Liz on Friday. She said there is no problem with bringing McCormick (without hiring him at one of our institutions) if he has his own insurance. He'll simply have to sign a waiver at the ship. Is this correct?

I also asked her about the requirement (from the Chief Sci manual) of having him fill out a special Volunteer Form for the director's approval. She said they pretty much ignore that form these days. Is this correct?

    Thanks, Doug
