Janeen,
I wish to request an Op Area to include the following coordinates.
32 deg 40 min N
117 deg 20 min W.
We hope to operate within ca 5 nautical miles of this location. The bottom
is soft in this area and the depth (ca 100m) are good for our work. Last
year we could not operate here due to America Cup trials and were forced to
go to hard bottom, which tore our nets. Hence, the Op area is quite
important.
The Navy may also want to know what wire and instruments will go over, I
believe. The res techs can supply this information, but the following may
suffice:
0.322" wire for CTD
0.5" wire for trawl
0.25" wire for plankton net
0.5" wire for multicorer (I believe)
In all cases, depths will be to bottom, ca 100m.
Please let me know when an Op area has been assigned, and what it is.
Thanks,
Dave

Janeen,
Sorry for the delay. The forms were filled out by most of the SIO 280
students today. The additional students in SIO 210 must still do so. I'll
bring them down to you no later than 22 Nov 95.
Is it still necessary that individuals not employed directly by UCSD, e.g.
students on fellowships, must volunteer by signing the appropriate forms,
for insurance reasons?
A tentative list of participants is:
5 faculty:
D. Checkley, Chief Scientist, faculty
L. Levin, faculty

Schedulers et al.,
This is to confirm that we (Checkley, Levin, Talley, Henderschott) have
decided to combine our respective courses (SIO 280 Biological Oceanography
and SIO 210 Physical Oceanography) to participate in the UC Ship Funds
-funded cruise of Tues 28 Nov 95 on the New Horizon.
I must still compute my best estimate of the number of participants, but a
rough estimate for planning purposes is
students in 280: 38
students in 210 but not in 280: 10
faculty (Checkley, Levin, Talley, Henderschott,Rosenblatt): 4
res tech: 1 (or more)
other techs: at least 4 (Jim Wilkinson; one each from labs of Checkley,
Levin, Rosenblatt)
total (tentative): 38+10+4+1+4 = 57
This number may increase due to the addition of assistants or students not
on my current list, or decrease due to conflicts of schedule by students.
I'll be back regarding any gear in addition to that on our original
request, and an op area, schedule of activities, and crowd control.
Please contact me if you have questions.
Thanks,
Dave
