  • Tom:

The needs for our New Horizon trip next spring will be similar to those for the Juan de Fuca trip last summer ... with the exception of not needing an OBS van. Here are the requirements as I see them (Spahr may have comments on this also):

  • 1) 4-6 Airgun array (ala Perry Crampton) with Air compressor(s)? Please advise what is available.

  • 2) 0.68" wire for detonating electrical bottom shots

  • 3) We will install a hydrophone in the transducer well.

  • 4) Any chance of getting P-code GPS on the New Horizon?

  • 5) Enough fuel to conduct high speed transiting between stations (assume full speed operations about 50% of time at field area at lat= 10N, lon= 104W)

A meeting to discuss this might be appropriate ... probably good to have it when Perry is in town.

    Cheers,

    John

Spahr and I have had several long discussions about using airguns on our New Horizon East Pacific Rise trip next March and have come to the conclusion that it would be better to not bring airguns and to just use bottom explosive shots. This means that we would not need to have the compressor and airgun gear shipped back from Australia ... however, we would like to make use of the 0.68" wire for the shots. A 2400 m piece of wire is too short (that is just about the water depth), but perhaps stability is less of a problem with the 6500 m wire if we do not have the compressor weight. We would plan on shooting about 15 shots of 30 lbs. each, detonating them with electric blasting caps from a small shooting package to be placed on the end of the 0.68" wire. This is just what we did on the New Horizon last May.

    Cheers,

  • John

Here is a list of the personnel that will be going on the New Horizon trip in March (the usual suspects):

  • John Hildebrand
  • Spahr Webb
  • Wayne Crawford
  • Rob Sohn
  • David Jabson
  • Jeff Ridgeway
  • Mark Zumberge (only for about 6 hr the first day)

  • Bob Wilson (Res. Tech)

Please pass this on to Larry Eastman since he called and left a voice mail asking for it.

    Thanks,

    John
