John:
I am sending this with copies to Spahr, Rose and Capt. Althouse to verify
that my version of the New Horizon travels in Aug. Sept. is correct.
Althouse recently checked the stability situation for New Horizon, with
regard to fuel burnout. The result is that she will sail on 23 August for
Astoria and refuel there. We will join the ship there and go to Cleft
(44¡40'N, 130¡22'W), then Tully (48¡10'N, 127¡10'W), then 24 hours for Neah
Bay operations, then Port Angeles for fuel and disembark the scientific
party (unless we need some people to pack things en route for quick offload
later). She then sails for Port Hueneme to be there early 18 September at
the latest for us to offload and be clear of the ship by evening for the
Santa Barbara group to take over first thing on the 19th.
I make this to be a noon departure from Astoria on 27 August, with Neah bay
operations starting the morning of 12 Sept. and the Port Angeles stop the
afternoon of the 13th, figuring at 11 knots, with 13 days on station in
combination at Cleft and Tully.
We need at least a four transponder array at Cleft next month in order to
deploy gravity/differential pressure benchmarks. To do that we need a
minimum of six working units at the time we sail. I will naturally be
interested in what comes of your review of the situation. Shouldn't you
expect that the two that stopped answering after a short time will come up
on their timers? Recovery of them would help diagnose their problems (which
do not seem to be the same for all). I am sure you have checked the
on-board parts of the system in detail.
Let me know if there is anything I can do before you return to port.
I will comment separately on the RIDGE proposal.
Fred.

Spahr and John have requested that we add two days of time to
Spiess' currently scheduled cruise from August 21 - 13 September. (to do equipment recovery off Neah Bay)
After some discussion, we thought it might be best to add only one day, and to schedule an off load day in Port Hueneme for Spiess' group and Webb's group. Childress would start in Port Hueneme on 19 September (or eve departure on 18th). We were planing to meet Childress at Port Hueneme anyway, so no difference for him, but a considerable amount to work for MPL. We would cover the cost with the extra ONR day. Childress has requested conducting cable, which will be on, and Pieper can use .680 as well. Spiess will use the A-frame instead of hy-hoe.
The new schedule would look like this:
Spiess depart 24 August (Thursday) San Diego
(intermediate stops in Neah Bay off load sci. party)
arrive 17 Sept. (Sunday) Port Hueneme
off load 17-18 Sept. (Sun & Mon) Port Hueneme
shore side crane 18 Sept (am)
Childress load pm 18 Sept. Port Hueneme
depart 19 Sept (or eve 19th) Port Hueneme
arrive 01 Oct Port Hueneme
Pieper depart 02 Oct Port Hueneme
arrive 07 Oct San Diego
The reason for looking at Port Hueneme vs. having Spiess return to
San Diego and simply adding two days to Spiess are as follows:
to advance the Spiess cruise two days earlier (19 Sept.) would be hard
for MPL because they will have just returned from the Cande Melville cruise on
12 August (they need to turn some equipment around).
to delay arrival by two days to 15 September means that 16 & 17 are
left for off loading and turning ship around to go back to Port Hueneme.
The schedule presented above not only gives Webb his two days, but
delays Spiess departure by three days, thus giving MPL more days to
get their equipment ready.
Does anyone see any flaws in this.....?????? Or a better way to
accomplish this recovery?
By the way, Knox has told ONR and Webb/Hildebrand that we will find a way
to help them recovery this equipment.
Thanks Rose
