Liz, When I was in San Diego on 16 June, I talked with the captain of the New Horizon about the cruise track we planned and said I would forward a more detailed plan. Well, here it is. Could you please see that Captain Althouse gets it that it is forwarded to the New Horizon? Thanks.
Also, can you tell me where the ship expects to be docked in Acapulco? Instructions for finding it from the airport? Thanks! Bess
Cruis plans for New Horizon 8 July - 3 August:
Four intensive stations are planned. Each will require about 3 days on station. APPROXIMATE locations given
Station 1: 14.5 N, 95.5 W (just offshore from Acapulco) Station 2: 10 N, 100 W Station 3: 15 N, 105 W Station 4: 20 N, 110 W
12 - 13 transect stations planned. Each requires approximately 6 hours (maybe less, maybe more sometimes). Four of these will coincide with the above 4 stations, and the 6 hours will NOT be in addition to the 3 days already planned for these sites. The transect stations will fall on the following lines:
Line 1: between stations 1 and 2 above Line 2: between station 2 and 15 N, 115 W Line 3: between 15 N, 115 W and 15 N, 100 W Line 4: between 15 N, 105 W and 25 N, 115 W
Here's what I propose for a cruise track:
So leg 1 is approximately 6.3 days steaming, 6 days on intensive stations and 2 days at transect stations. Total = 14.2 days -- VERY APPROXIMATE! Leg 2 then is 4.6 days steaming, 6 days on intensive stations and 1 day at transect stations. Total = 11.6 days. Both legs total 25.8 days. I didn't have a proper chart so please don't laugh if I'm way off. But if I'm not too far off, this indicates we can make the Manzanillo port call easily (especially since we can juggle one or two of the transect stations from the first leg to the second if necessary) and can easily fit the whole trip into the allotted time. Oh, I forgot we need to get home to San Diego....That never takes long, does it?! That's another 4 days. I know where I can cut a couple days and a few transect stations, depending on how things are going. So let's start with this overall plan and work with it as we go.
