    Liz,

here is a rough list of the equipment and gear I shall need to be stowing on the New Horizon for my July cruise. Spahr emailed me and we discussed some of the storage issues -- it sounds manageable.

The main large items are the following:

    2 incubators, refrigerator size

    4 - 5 wooden filter racks, 12 x 12 x 36 in

    3 wodden crates each containing 1 30-liter Go-Flo bottle (approx 15 x 18 x 65 in)

3 bathtub size plexiglass seawater incubators in wooden shipping boxes P> The frig type incubators need to be stored inside and Spahr has said there will be space in the upper lab for these during his cruise. The 6 boxes/crates can be secured on the deck if necessary. The filter racks should be inside.

In addition to these largish individual items, we will have an assortment of plastic and cardboard boxes which require inside storage. Their combined volume (including the large individual items listed) is approximately enough to fill a standard 11 - 14 foot rental truck. However, the miscellaneous boxes are not very heavy for the most part. They contain things like literally thousands of empty plastic bottles, filter papers, general lab supplies, etc. So I think it's space, rather than weight, that may be our concern.

Let me know if you need more detailed information. It's hard to be more specific without telling you a lot of irrelevant junk, but if you need particular info, let me know. Bess

    Dear Liz,

Here are the details of our planned station locations for the July cruise in Mexican waters on the New Horizon. Sampling will be confined to a triangle defined by the following three stations:

    A. 110 W, 20 N B. 115 W, 10 N C. 95 W, 10 N

These stations constitute the corners of the triangle. We will also sample at stations on the lines connecting these corners and possibly within the triangle defined by those lines.

Station D (103 W, 15 N) is in the middle of the line connecting stations A and C. The most likely internal stations would be on the line connecting stations D and B. (If you draw this out, it's much easier to see.)

The order of the stations is yet to be determined. It partly depends on the timing of the internal stop. It would be optimal to sample the inshore stations first, then stop for refueling and drop off the Mexican observers. We could then head out to the offshore stations and head home to San Diego with no further stops and no Mexican observers to send home from San Diego.

What do I need to do in terms of contacting Dr. Novelo for a letter of support as mentioned in the fax you forwarded to me? Do I need such a letter? Do I write and ask for one or invite him to go on the cruise or what? !!! Thanks! Bess

Dear Liz, I'm finally starting to catch up on business after returning from the trip and reviewing all those proposals that had piled up in the meantime. And I'm feeling completely out of touch with what I need to do to prepare for my cruise on the New Horizon in July. Could you please remind me of where we are and what I need to do?

    My specific questions are:

  • 1. Who do I communicate with about equipment and instrumentation for the ship? I'm thinking of isotope vans and their arrangement, CTD, running seawater, etc.

  • 2. Is there an agent you usually use in Manzanillo who I could talk to (or preferably email with) about arrangement there?

  • 3. Can I put some of my equipment on the ship in San Diego before it departs for this series of cruises? I have a few largish wooden shipping boxes containing Niskins and that sort of thing. Who do I talk to about this?

  • 4. Do you need anything more for the foreign clearance? I never heard from my people here if they sent you things or not while I was gone, so I thought I'd ask first about what you need.

  • 5. Just what is the deal with Altabet's cruise or additional ship days? I'll be meeting with him next week and I'd like to know what I'm talking about!

Thanks very much for looking after things while I was unable to help. And for pointing me in the right directions for all of these queries! Bess Ward

Liz, my fax number is 408-459-4882. I must have been on autopilot and typed in my phone number in the previous message. Sorry about that!

Yes, sounds like a raw deal for him. Plus, it sorta rearranges that beautiful science and cruise plan we had just made! I wish him luck, but neither Neal nor Roger sounded at all hopeful.

    > With that said; the cruise will be shorten by 6 days. I understand that > you want to add an intermediate port stop in Acapulco to let off > Mexican observers, and this will allow us the opportunity to fuel.

The port stop was planned when we thought we had the extra 6 days, but it still may be the efficient thing to do. When do we need to decide on the actual dates for that?

    > Who have you spoken with regard to using only one rad. van, other than the > res. techs and Capt. Althouse ? Radioisotope committee?

I have not spoken with the captain about the rad van. I phoned Joris Gieskes and he okayed the use of 15N in the lab, i.e., not requiring an isotope van for the stable isotope, on the phone. We will still use 14C and will have an isotope van for that. I relayed this information to Liz Rios but have not done any more formal isotope paperwork yet. I was waiting to hear from a couple other participants who might want to use isotopes but I think I'm ready to go ahead with the forms now. Joris said Art Yayanos was taking over as isotope person, but as long as that decision stands, it solves a lot of space problems for us. I also discussed the space issue with Ron Comer, who thought having only one isotope van on the ship would be the best solution to the deck space problem. Should I notify the PIs on the previous leg or tell someone else?

    > Let us know what we can do

Thanks! I also spoke with Woody Sutherland (?) who said he would look into arranging for us to have the appropriate tech help on the cruise. It wasn't clear that a marine tech, with no CTD expertise, would suffice, but we sure don't need two different people. Anyway, I hope that decision is in the works. What else do I need to be doing?
