Cc: rdufour@ucsd.edu, baker@pmel.noaa.gov, jdelaney@u.washington.edu Dear Mr. Redman: Since I will be Chief Scientist for the R/V New Horizon work in the NE Pacific this September, Rose Dufour passed on to me the material that you had sent to her. Our work area is near 44-40N, 130 W, thus considerably south of your cable route. We are involved in a large scale program on the Juan de Fuca Ridge, however, and workers in other parts of the program may be closer to the cable trajectory near 48 N. Dr. Ed Baker of NOAA PMEL maintains a compilation of all the effort on the program for this coming year, and it would probably be useful if you were to inform him directly on this topic, if that has not already been done. He can then be sure that any workers operating near the place where the cable crosses the ridge will be alert to potential problems. His e-mail adress is: baker@pmel.noaa.gov Thanks for passing the information along to us. Fred Spiess.

One option is to go into Astoria on 20 Sept, with the ship returning to San Diego by Sept. 29. There is still a pending Zumberge request, according to Rose, that would also be for work on the Juan de Fuca, and might prolong the time up there. Since that work would involve the Control Vehicle and our group as well, we will, once the nature of Zumberge's time is clear, work out an overall plan that may differ somewhat from the one now on the books, but probably not much overall (except for the usual caveat that this is all about a year away, and you can never tell about the ship schedules, particularly this year when we have a major refit for New Horizon occurring or not occurring).
