Rose,

   I am following up on our Chief Scientist Cruise Check-off List for the
September 1998, NOAA PACS mooring recovery cruise on the Melville.

   I will be the chief scientist on the cruise (Note: Bob Weller will not
be going on this cruise.)  Below is the check list and I will address each
item individually.

    1. Request foreign clearances, if needed (7 months before cruise)
	NONE NEEDED

    2. Customs requirements for scientific equipment placed on
     research vessel, or shipped to/from portsoutside U.S.
	NONE NEEDED

    3. Submit Cruise Plan/Prospectus
	SUBMITTED ALREADY.  PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU REQUIRE MORE
	INFORMATION


    4. Arrange shop needs- any special loading or construction
     (winch needs & wire type/size)
                                                       o Marine Facility Shop
                                                       Joe Corduan 534-1629
	RICK TRASK AND WIL OSTROM ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR LOADING, UNLOADING 
	AND DECK OPERATIONS.  RICK AND WIL MET WITH	WOODY SUTHERLAND, 
	RON COMER AND RON MOE AT THE SIO MARINE FACILITIES BUILDING IN 
	THE EARLY APRIL.  AT THAT MEETING THEY REVIEWED REQUIREMENTS
	FOR OUR LOADING AND UNLOADING AND STAGING OPERATIONS.  RICK AND WIL
	ARE REMAINING IN CONTACT WITH WOODY WITH RESPECT TO CRUISE LOGISTICS.

	AT THIS TIME WE PLAN TO ARRIVE IN SAN DIEGO SEPT 3. ON SEPT 4 WE
	EXPECT TO USE A CRANE TO LOAD OUR BALL VAN AND WINCH AND HAVE
	A FORK LIFT AVAILABLE TO UNLOAD OUR CONTIANERS.  ON SEPT 5, WE
	WOULD CONTINUE LOADING SMALLER LAB GEAR.  SEPT 6-7, WE WILL STAGE THE
	LAB, RIG THE SUPPLEMENTAL MET SENSORS AND RADIOMETERS, AND HOOK UP
	OUR CTD.

	WE EXPECT UNLOADING AND PACKING OUR GEAR FOR SHIPMENT BACK TO WOODS HOLE
	TO TAKE 3 DAYS OR LESS.  WE PLAN TO DEPART SAN DIEGO ON OCT. 3.

    5. Submit loading plan

	IF YOU NEED MORE FORMAL DETAILS THAN ABOVE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

    6. Request for Isotope Usage on SIO Vessel
	NONE NEEDED.

    7. Arrange explosive handling, if needed
 	NONE NEEDED.

    8 Submit Notice to Mariners to USCG Guard Office
	NONE NEEDED.

    9. Obtain clearance for Navy op areas, esp. off San Diego (1
     mo. Prior to Cruise)
 	NONE NEEDED.

    10. Distribute and return forms for cruise participants
	I'M DISTRIBUTING THIS NOW.
	WHEN WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE THESE FORMS IN HAND?

    11. Return Dive Plan, if any diving is to be done
	NONE NEEDED.

    12. Submit Cruise Participant/Status list

PACS mooring Recovery Participant List (Total of 10 in Scientific Party)

NOTE WE WILL HAVE THREE NON-WHOI STUDENTS ON THIS TRIP.  I PLAN TO
MAKE THESE STUDENTS WHOI GUEST INVESTIGATORS.  IS THERE ANY OTHER PAPER
WORK I NEED TO COMPLETE FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION?

BRENT JONES IS BEING SENT BY RUSS DAVIS AND JIM DUFOUR TO DEPLOY SOME FLOATS.
I DO NOT PLAN TO MAKE HIM A GUEST INVESTIGATOR SINCE HE IS A SIO EMPLOYEE.
PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I NEED TO TAKE SOME OTHER ACTION FOR HIS
PARTICIPATION.

WE HAVE ONE PERSON "TBA" FROM OUR RIGGING SHOP.  WE HOPE TO SEND SOMEONE NEW
FROM THE SHOP TO "LEARN THE ROPES."  I EXPECT TO HAVE A NAME FOR THAT SPOT
BY NEXT WEEK.

WHOI PACS Mooring Final Recovery Cruise

R/V Melville

San Diego to San Diego

8 September 1998  to 30 September 1998

Objectives:  Recovery two surface moorings located along
	125W at 3S and 10N.  Conduct Meteorological Obs.
	at mooring sites.  Conduct a hydrographic transects
	along 125 from 3S to 10N. (Deployment of Davis' floats?)

Preliminary Cruise Plan:
	Steam past 10N and inspect the buoy.  Continue
	to 3S and recover buoy.  Take CTD station casts
	every 0.5deg to 1000m from 3S to 10N.  Recover
	buoy at 10N.  Return to port.

Four to five participants from the WHOI upper ocean processes group.
