WEEKLY SCIENCE REPORT
R/V NEW HORIZON: Cruise 9810 NH/ UNOLS
Submitted by: KenZie DeLaine, Chief Scientist /NAVOCEANO
Date: 19 October 1998

The Weekly Science Report covers period 12 (0800L) to 19 (0800L), October
1998. In spite of the adverse weather the ship encountered on two days
during the week, Cruise 9810/NH has progressed very well and is ahead of
schedule.
Eight of the original nine transects and two additional transects have been
completed this survey. Two lines were added in the southeastern sector of
the survey area on the request of the Acoustics Data Bases Branch, Code
N532, NAVOCEANO. The ship is presently working the seventh 24-Hr
Times-Series Station located at 34-01.7N and 119-00.6W.

Our accomplishments this week are as follows:
- Performed 160 CTD casts at 62 stations;
- 3 CTD Time-Series Station completed;
- 168 Salinity Samples processed;
- 45 XBT probes launched (40 Good/5Bad);
- Bottom Sample, 10 Cores/2 Grabs;
- ADCP Data collected continuously.

DATA QUALITY: Very good. The last ten gravity cores have been very
successful. The cores were taken from a depth range of 122 to 1900 meters.
The average core penetration was approximately 105 centimeters.

SURVEY EQUIPMENT STATUS: No problems. Preliminary data processing indicated
that all survey equipment sensors are still within specification.

HABITABILITY: "Hump Day" has arrived for this cruise: The food and the living
conditions are excellent.

NAVOCEANO/SIO RELATIONSHIP:
Even though the Padres dropped two games at the Big Dance, the work
relationship remains high among the crew.
