1. Note this is a collaborative program with MPL/SIO group, who will have
separate 2-year funding on OCE-9019780 (4/1/99-3/31/01). The MPL group will be
involved in the first two of our requested three cruises; these first two
cruises should therefore be scheduled respectively at beginning and end of
second project year. The RSMAS/PGC group is involved in a related project with
JOIDES Resolution that may be scheduled May-July, 2001, so scheduling the
second year Revelle cruise later than March 2001 may not be possible.
2. More details for multi-cruise request:
The first two cruises involve the MPL Control Vehicle to test and then deploy
long-term borehole instruments. The third cruise is a data recovery effort
about one-year after main deployment cruise, and is requested with ALVIN.
3 cruises requested here:
(1) Test cruise off San Diego early in year 2 using large DP-ship, 4 days on
site, start and end ports San Diego
(2) Deployment cruise late in year 2, preferrably using Revelle, 15 days on
site in Panama Basin with additional transit time from appropriate ports
(Panama, Puntarenas, even San Diego?)
(3) Data recovery cruise late in year 3, using ALVIN (also feasible with
JASON), 2 days on site in Panama Basin. Timing relatively flexible to fit
Atlantis schedule; sites convenient to Canal.
Times above are time on site; transit days need to be figured in!
Second and third cruises would probably involve one Central American port,
another port to be named, consistent with ship schedules.
Second cruise would also involve deployment of PGC heat flow probe on trawl
wire.
