CRUISE PLAN from Peter Lonsdale 28/02/01

The objectives of this leg are (i)to complete a study of the structure

and tectonic history of Molokai fracture zone that was started last

year with a Seabeam 2112 survey. This time we will use the new Simrad

EM-120 sonar to augment the multibeam coverage, and collect magnetic

profiles to date the crust each side of the several strands of this

complex fracture zone.

and (ii)to introduce the graduate students

of SIO Class240 (Marine Geology) to marine geophysical surveying by

taking them on this short leg and involving them in the collection,

processing and geological interpretation of the underway data (multi-

beam bathymetry, reflectivity, magnetics, acoustic profiling).

The track is planned to go via the following waypoints (subject to

modification based on results of REVELLE's February 2001 San Diego

to Hilo transit through the same area):

1. Hilo, Hawaii

2. 22deg.00'N, 151deg.00'W

3. 24d.00'N,141d.00'W

4. 24d.00'N,137d.00'W

5. 25d.20'N,136d.20'W

6. 26d.00'N,131d.00'W

7. San Diego

Scientific party will be:(a)Lonsdale, 2 STS techs, and advanced graduate

student Eakins; (b)up to ~10 Scripps SIO240 graduate students
