| Nov 11-17 2006 R/V Revelle deployment
of geodetic sensors on the Gaviota Slide (about 10 miles off the Santa Barbara
coast) Science tasks: 1. Deploy three FOSS (Fiber Optic Seafloor Strainmeter) systems. This entails performing a two-body launch (deployment sled and depressor-weight) and towing the sled at 1 knot along the bottom for several hundred meters. (Zumberge and Blum) 2. Deploy acoustic geodesy array (four precision transponders, four nodes, and one environmental string). This task requires dropping the instruments over the side at pre-determined coordinates and surveying them with combined GPS positioning and acoustic ranging. (Chadwell) 3. Perform bottom survey of Gaviota Slide using video, down-looking sonar, and mass spectrometry. This requires launching the MPL CV (control vehicle) and towing it at about 1 knot in a survey pattern. (Zumberge, Blum, Driscoll, and Camilli) 4. Collect towed chirp sonar records. We will use Driscoll’s vehicle for this, towing it at the surface in a survey pattern. (Driscoll) 5. Multibeam echo sounding of Gaviota Slide and surroundings. To be done with standard Revelle system. (Driscoll) 6. Core sampling. Done with a gravity core. (Driscoll) 7. Water sampling (Barbeau). Deck Mounted and Deployable Equipment Cross-line winch (with short wire and tether). Needs compressed air. Slack tensioner (with 0.680” fiber-optic wire). Needs air compressor. Over-the-side sheave (for 0.680” wire) FOSS sled and mounting rack CV Chirp Sonar Gravity core Acoustic geodesy components and floats DeepTow van (8’ x 20’) Barbeau van (8’ x 10’ ?) Some Issues: loading – Friday, November 10 is a UC holiday navigation (on bottom). Does Revelle have USBL acoustic nav system? shipboard – navigation display overlaying bathymetry Rich Camilli, WHOI; needs at-sea transfer of personnel (two) and equipment. On transit we plan to use the CV to recover some seafloor instrumentation near San Diego Res-tech supplied equipment: pinger and clamps for 0.680 wire recorder for above RDF and strobes for acoustic geodesy equipment CTD Rosette (?) ________________ ________________ |
