Overview: This cruise is to test two new pieces of equipment. The first is a deployable EM transmitter, which looks very much like our standard EM receivers, with four 5 m arms and a concrete anchor. We call these DUESI's (Deployed Undersea Electromagnetic Source Instruments). The second are two standard EM receivers with prototype electrodes and amplifier systems. We will call these test instruments. Finally, in order to test the effectiveness of the DUESI's, and to collect some useful geological information, we will deploy 6 standard MT instruments, 3 of which will have vertical arms as well as horizontal ones. Five of the MT instruments and the two test instruments will be left deployed until a recovery cruise in early January.

Any moderately deep water would suffice (600--1000 m), but in order to collect potentially interesting geological data, we are going to position the instruments in an array across the northern tip of the Coronado Bank, where the Coronado Bank Fault is thought to pass. Here are the site locations:

Here is a prospective time-line for operations:
08:00 Push off Marfac. Safety briefing and transit channel.
09:00 Round sea-buoy. Transit to site MT1 (18 miles)
11:00 Arrive MT1, deploy instruments MT1-6 and T1-T2 (1 hour each)
19:00 Deploy DUESI-1 and DUESI-2. (1 hour each)
21:00 DUESIs start 6-hour transmission. Heave to and sleep.
03:00 Recover D1, D2, and MT6. 40 minutes each
05:00 Start transit to Marfac
08:00 Tie up and offload.

Deck load:
10 concrete anchors, 400 lb each
10 seafloor instuments 300 lb each.
Total: 7,000 lb.

Ship's equipment required:
Small crane for deployments and recoveries
12 kHz hull transducer.
