| Cruise Plan |
Overview: This
cruise is to test two new pieces of equipment. The first is a deployable
EM transmitter, which looks very much like our standard EM receivers,
with four 5 m arms and a concrete anchor. We call these DUESI's (Deployed
Undersea Electromagnetic Source Instruments). The second are two standard
EM receivers with prototype electrodes and amplifier systems. We will
call these test instruments. Finally, in order to test the effectiveness
of the DUESI's, and to collect some useful geological information, we
will deploy 6 standard MT instruments, 3 of which will have vertical arms
as well as horizontal ones. Five of the MT instruments and the two test
instruments will be left deployed until a recovery cruise in early January. Any moderately deep water would suffice (600--1000 m), but in order to
collect potentially interesting geological data, we are going to position
the instruments in an array across the northern tip of the Coronado Bank,
where the Coronado Bank Fault is thought to pass. Here are the site locations: Here is a prospective time-line for operations: Deck load: Ship's equipment required:
