POLICY ON ALCOHOL AND DRUGS ABOARD SIO VESSELS

All scientific party members embarking on SIO vessels must have executed this form within the preceding one-year period or must execute a new form prior to embarkation.

The following extracts from SIO policy concerning alcohol and drugs on our ships are sent to you in this manner to ensure that you understand and agree to observe our rules on these issues. Violation of these policies may result in you or your research program being barred from SIO vessels in the future.

ALCOHOL

As indicated in General Memorandum No. 30D, and as amended by Marine Superintendent's Memo of 15 January 1988:

This policy is not intended merely to restrict the freedoms which participants in our expeditions enjoy ashore. It stems from obligations of the University of California under United States maritime law, and is essential to reduce liability risk to the University under that law. It is in accord with UNOLS policy (see reverse).

ILLEGAL DRUGS

SIO vessels are in complete compliance with the United States "Zero Tolerance Program", as indicated in General Memorandum No. 83.

All illegal drugs are completely forbidden on SIO vessel. To this end narcotic detector dogs will be used on a random and unannounced basis. If illegal drugs are found on any SIO vessel, the person(s) responsible will immediately be turned over to the proper authorities.

Please indicate that you have read this letter and will comply with same by signing below.
