Reports: Chief scientists
are required to complete several post-cruise report forms. Forms will
be sent to you by the Ship Scheduling Office prior to departure. They
will already be filled in to the extent that we have the required information.
Included are:
All of these reports should be submitted promptly (preferably, fill them out when on board) and returned to the Ship Scheduling Office which will forward them to the appropriate agencies.
Custody of Samples and Underway Data:Federal funding agencies and SIO directors have many times reaffirmed the policy that samples and data collected from oceanographic vessels should be made available to the general scientific community, not just the person who collected them. An initial period of proprietary use by the originating scientist(s) is proper, but indefinite-term hoarding is not. Responsibility for care and distribution of such samples and data collected from SIO ships rests with the appropriate curators at SIO. This policy and its resulting procedures have proven valuable in ensuring that materials collected on SIO expeditions have benefited many more researchers than those involved in the collecting expedition, and that the collections become increasingly comprehensive and useful. With increasing inter-institution use of ships under the UNOLS scheduling system, questions frequently arise as to the appropriate final location of such data and samples. The minimum that we require is that this matter be discussed before a cruise, that the data and samples go into a properly managed permanent collection and that their whereabouts be known. Each type of sample is numbered consecutively throughout a named expedition. Underway Geophysical Data (navigation, depth,
magnetics, gravity, seismic reflection, etc.): Policies: Underway data collected on SIO vessels are checked out from GDC following duplication, for on-campus use only, except where prior arrangements have been made, and with the understanding that ultimately all original records will be returned to GDC for permanent archiving. A chief scientist, whether or not from Scripps, may place a two-year proprietary hold restricting access to the data; otherwise the data are available to any Scripps student or staff member during this period, following which, copies of the data will be sent to the appropriate national data center (National Geophysical Data Center). Exceptions to these procedures, should be discussed prior to the cruise with the GDC curator, who can also provide a detailed policy statement. A special set of policies governs the collection, archiving, holding and distribution of SEA BEAM data on Melville and Roger Revelle. Copies are available from STS on request. Geological Samples: If the PI wishes to deposit cores or dredged rocks in some repository that does not meet the criteria noted above, arrangements for this are to be made with the SIO curator prior to the collecting cruise. Such arrangements normally include an agreement to deposit appropriate amounts of archival materials in the SIO collections, for future use. Such materials would normally be made available after release by the originating PI or two years, whichever is first. For samples deposited at SIO, the following procedures will be followed. All samples and their associated records are turned over to the curator as soon as they arrive at SIO. If you wish to restrict access to the materials until you have had an opportunity to investigate them, the duration and conditions of restricted access are to be worked out with the curator. During the period of restricted access, inquiries regarding these materials are referred to the collector. As a rule, the curatorial staff tries to dissuade any investigator from using more than half of the material remaining in the working half of any specific interval in a sediment core (or any single rock in a dredge haul). If samples are collected within the jurisdiction of a coastal state, some of the material may be required for deposit with that state. Biological Samples: |
